Why our work is needed
Demasiados residentes comparecen ante los tribunales sin la ayuda de un abogado. A menudo, esto se ve agravado por un desequilibrio de poder. Por ejemplo, en el Tribunal de Arrendadores-Inquilinos de DC, sólo el 12% de los inquilinos tienen abogado, mientras que el 95% de los propietarios están representados.
En los tribunales de familia, las partes que comparecen con abogado obtienen resultados sustancialmente mejores que las partes sin abogado.
En la Subdivisión de Violencia Doméstica y en el Tribunal de Familia de DC, las personas que solicitan una orden de protección tienen más del doble de probabilidades de éxito cuando cuentan con representación letrada (27% pro se; 62% representados). Los padres que solicitan órdenes de manutención tienen más del cuádruple de probabilidades de éxito cuando están representados (10% pro se; 43% representados).
Las bibliotecas jurídicas tradicionales abiertas al público son difíciles de utilizar. Entre los obstáculos figuran:
